A Player Is Not An Island

A solution for the mind-body problem and a new dawn for technical training

For “technical training” to be fully transferable to the actual game, its curriculum must reflect soccer’s cognitive elements. Isolated technical exercises – such as conventional juggling, dribbling around cones, and passing against a wall – have minimal impact on player development at elite level, as they do not replicate the reality of the game. This is because, out on the pitch, every technical action is combined with perception and decision-making tasks. Our actions with the ball only occur while our brain is faced with an overload of multiple variables – time, space, opponents, and teammates. This is why no player is an island unto themselves in soccer. In the cauldron that is a competitive game, technical actions are always performed under a taxing, unforgiving cognitive load.

To future-proof players for tomorrow’s game, technical training methodologies must recreate this cognitive aspect. This includes vision and awareness, the ability to quickly process and understand information, and fast and effective decision-making. It is these traits which will separate players in the top professional divisions from players in the lower leagues. The Beyond Juggling curriculum, designed and endorsed by some of the world’s leading player development experts, focuses on all of these elements. Through a competitive pair-based curriculum that progressively becomes more challenging, players must show a high degree of technical skill while simultaneously carrying out a variety of cognitively demanding tasks. Sounds a bit like the game of soccer, doesn’t it? 


Challenging cognitive tasks are at the heart of the curriculum. Decision-making, task switching, reaction speed, memory, synchronization, anticipation, concentration, and mental endurance are all trained in a variety of fun and creative ways.


A large section of the curriculum specifically trains players' vision and spatial awareness. Forced to disconnect their attention from the ball, players must read and respond to visual cues while simultaneously keeping the juggling rally alive.


While performing a range of brain games, players must execute increasingly demanding juggling combinations that require different touch quantities, weights, directions, and surfaces. Ball control, first touch, and ambidexterity are all developed.


The curriculum also includes juggling games that develop players' physical attributes in a fun, competitive way. These games train not only coordination but balance, rhythm, muscular endurance, and agility - all alongside technical skills!

Luciano Santos & Fabricio Monte are two of Brazil’s top talent developers, boasting over 25 years’ combined experience coaching in Santos FC’s esteemed youth academy – a superstar factory that has produced the likes of Pele, Neymar, Robinho, and many of the latest samba starlets. With decades of soccer and futsal expertise in one of the world’s most competitive youth hotspots, Luciano and Fabricio’s recent graduates include Rodrygo (Real Madrid), Emerson (Chelsea), Giovanni Manson (Ajax), Gabriel Barbosa (Flamengo), Kaio Jorge (Santos FC), and Yuri Alberto (Santos FC). Over 50 of their former players have gone on to play professionally, and over 15 have represented Brazil.

Cognitive training experts MBM (Michel Bruyninckx Method) have helped refine the Beyond Juggling methodology and curriculum to maximize its effectiveness. MBM Founder & Author Michel Bruyninckx is a Belgian UEFA A coach and brain training expert who is widely cited as one of the key figures behind Belgium’s “golden generation” (Kevin de Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Dries Mertens, Vincent Kompany, Romelu Lukaku, Axel Witsel, and others). Michel’s innovative programmes for both clubs and individual players have led to consulting contracts with Real Madrid, Hoffenheim, Rangers, AC Milan, Valencia CF, Genk, Anderlecht, and Aspire Academy. Beyond Juggling is officially endorsed by Michel and MBM – a team which includes former AFC Ajax coach Ed Graper – and is set to become an integral part of the home practice curriculums of elite European clubs. 


Not only is isolated technical training disconnected from soccer's cognitive processes, it also lacks its social and competitive elements. Players develop best when they are absorbed in play, not when they are lone wolves. Beyond Juggling turns technical training into an entertaining game - then supercharges it by replicating the actual cognitive demands of soccer.


Culture always wins. Build a competitive pair juggling culture among friends, team-mates, and family members. Create healthy rivalries on a small-scale, or go a step further and create tournaments and leader boards for your entire team or club. Play in the living room, in the backyard, at a friend's house, in the schoolyard, at the practice field, and in the locker room!


Beyond Juggling can be accessed anywhere, at any time, and on any device. All you need is a ball, internet access, and two players. Each game is filmed in HD from multiple angles and is accompanied by comprehensive written instructions. Get thousands of "intelligent touches" before school, after school, in break times, before training, or after training!


The programme is aimed at elite players only. This is because the games are extremely demanding, both technically and cognitively. We recommend the programme only to players who can comfortably do at least 300 solo juggles. As long as a player can do this, their age doesn’t matter – players from as young as 8 all the way up to adults can enjoy the programme. 

We are focused on selling bulk licenses to soccer organizations (club/academy/college/school teams) of 50 players or more. We deal with both professional and amateur clubs all around the world. These bulk licenses, which involve individual accounts being set up for each player, offer significant discounts compared to purchasing non-organizational licenses, which cost $299 USD per player, per year.  

The default language of the programme is English. English-speaking players are used for all video demonstrations, and the game instructions/rules are also explained in English. However, we are currently working on translating the portal and content into different languages. Please get in touch about your language requests.

No, the main idea is that the players themselves create their own pair juggling culture and integrate the 101 games into their daily lives. This is the true power of the programme, as each player in the club/academy/college/school team will have their own individual account set up, which is accessible on any device. Of course, organizations that buy licenses are free to encourage their coaches to use the games as part of their regular team training curriculum too (as warm-ups, on low-intensity training days, or as part of fun intra-squad tournaments).

No, the programme is a long-term, open-ended curriculum. It is not a finite course with a set beginning and end point. The platform is designed to become a part of the player’s daily soccer culture and lifestyle. In Volume 1, there are 10 levels and 101 games in total. All levels and games are available from the start and players can choose to access them in any order. 

No, there are 10 levels in Volume 1 and – generally speaking – each level gets more difficult technically and/or cognitively as you move up. Again, the programme is designed as an open-ended curriculum, not a linear course, so there is no set requirement to meet before you access the higher levels. Players have total freedom to access (and return to) whatever levels and games they wish. If players want to start on higher level games on their first day, they may do so. The programme also outlines additional ways to raise the difficulty level of the games and provide further challenge to players (one example is to increase the physical distance between the two players).

We only sell yearly licenses. Organizations pay a set fee and this will give their players access for an entire year. You will then be given the option to renew.  The fee we charge is based on how many players you wish to enroll. The more players involved, the bigger the discount you will receive.   

Yes, a device with internet access is required to log in to the portal and consume the videos and content. We have experimented with an App for offline access, but found it was not as reliable as browser access, and gave a poorer user experience. This is why access has to be through a web browser (Chrome, Mozilla, Safari, or Firefox). Each video in the programme is approximately 30 seconds long, so even if you cannot use WiFi, only a minimal amount of data is used.

Our Terms of Service prohibit the sharing of account logins and passwords. Each player is required to use their own individual account to access the material. The portal restricts logins for each account to a maximum of one device at a time. IP addresses are logged automatically to help detect activity that may be against our Terms of Service.
